On 15-December, the Union Cabinet approved a production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for semi-conductors worth Rs.76,000 crore. This is more a reaction to the acute global shortage of microchips impacting the auto industry. The PLI is a competitive incentive package offered to companies for setting up plants and manufacturing semiconductors and displays Fabrication units or Fabs are extremely complex and capital intensive.
