As of now there is nothing concrete but only there is a proposal from the government. The government has proposed to the farmers that it is willing to put the 3 Farm Bills on hold for a period of 18 months. By that time, an expert committee represented by farmers and government will give its recommendations and chart out a plan of action.

A lot will depend on the response of the farmers. For the time being, the farmers have been non-committal and do not want to accept anything short of total withdrawal of the 3 Farm Bills. The farmer unions will take a call after they deliberate internally on 21-Jan. The government and farmers will now meet once again on 22-Jan for their eleventh round.

Regarding the previous proposal by the Supreme Court to constitute a high powered committee to decide on the matter, farmers have already shown their disapproval. The farmers have even refused to participate in any Supreme Court sponsored committee or deliberations with the central government on the Farm Bills.

As of now the farmers don’t want anything short of total annulment of the 3 Farm Bills. However, the government will not give in so easily as this is a Bill passed in the two houses of Parliament, which makes it a democratic mandate. Thousands of farmers have been protesting in the outskirts of Delhi for close to two months, putting pressure on the state.
