Foreign portfolio investors were net investors to the tune of Rs.986 crore in the Indian equity markets in August. This figure has come down sharply after the FIIs sold more than Rs.6,800 crore in equities in the week ended 27 August. However, the month of August has also seen infusion in the debt segment at Rs.13,494 crore. As a result, the overall net inflow for August including debt and equity stood at relatively robust Rs.14,480 crore.

While the FIIs have been net buyers in most of emerging Asia, there has been some slowdown in the flows after the Fed almost confirmed that the liquidity taper would begin towards the end of the fiscal year. This has also been confirmed by Jerome Powell at the Jackson Hole Symposium. That is likely to see some measured action by FPIs as they prefer dollar assets when the dollar is likely to harden.
