According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association, exports of sugar for the first 11 months of the sugar year extending from Oct-20 to Sep-21 stood were 17.5% higher at 66.7 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period last year. This also includes a total of 4.50 lakh tonnes of exports under the Maximum Admissible Export Quota of the 2019-2020 season. Based on data coming from ports, the figure is likely cross 70 lakh tonnes by end of September.

With the global prices of sugar robust and Brazil still struggling to meet the world’s sugar demand, most sugar mills in India have also signed forward contracts for export of sugar in the upcoming season to the tune of almost 60 lakh tonnes. Hence it is anticipated that in the coming sugar year 2021-22, the sugar exports could even exceed the current year estimates of 70 lakh tonnes. That would be good news for the sugar industry.
