Indian telecom market is still expanding and that is the good news at the macro level. However, among the players the churn is quite intense. According to TRAI, for the month of June 2022, the latest month data reported by TRAI, the overall telecom subscriber base grew from 117.07 crore subscribers at the end of May 2022 to 117.29 crore subscribers at the end of June 2022. That is a month on month accretion of nearly 22 lakh subscribers to the total telecom base. This is dominated by wireless base and marginally fixed line base.

If you just look at the overall industry level accretion of 22 lakh subscribers, you don’t get the churn picture within the competitors. In June 2022, Reliance Jio added 42.23 lakh customers while Bharti Airtel added 7.93 lakh customers. In short, between them, they added 50.16 lakh subscribers. However, in the month of June, Vodafone Idea lost nearly 18 lakhs subscribers and BSNL lost over 13.27 lakh subscribers in the month. The growth of Jio and Bharti was by cannibalizing the market shares of Vodafone Idea and BSNL.

Twenty years back it would have been hard to believe that wired landlines would become almost marginal, but that is what has happened. Telecom subscriber base grew to 117.29 crore in June 2022, of which only 2.55 crore subscribers were landline subscribers while the rest were wireless subscribers. Here is the pecking order. Among the 2 leaders, Reliance Jio has 41.3 crore subscribers while Bharti Airtel has 36.29 crore subscribers. Vodafone Idea customer base has fallen sharply to 25.66 crore subscribers in June 2022.

On broadband, Jio has the natural advantage due to being a broadband first player. Broadband subscriber grew from 77.11 crore as of May 2022 to 80 crore as of June 2022. Reliance Jio has cornered a whopping 52.3% of the broadband market with 41.91 crore subscribers out of the overall base of 80 crore. Bharti Airtel had 21.94 crore subscribers and Vodafone Idea had 12.29 crore subscribers while BSNL had 2.5 crore subscribers. Jio leads by a margin and that is largely helped by its broadband first approach.
