How did India’s index stocks perform in the week ended 20 August?

If you look at the ten most valuable companies on the Nifty in terms of market capitalization, then 7 out of the top 10 most valuable companies on Nifty added Rs.131,173 crore in market value last week. Clearly, the focus this time around was on defensives like FMCG and IT. Hindustan Unilever and TCS were among the top gainers during the week adding nearly Rs.86,000 crore to the market cap between them. Here are the finer details.

The big market cap addition came from Hindustan Unilever which added Rs.50,234 crore while the other big boy TCS added Rs.35,344 crore. Among other major contributors, Bajaj Finance added Rs.30,442 crore while Infosys also piled up Rs.8,335 crore to market cap. HDFC, Wipro and RIL were other gainers. Banks were losers in the week with SBI losing Rs.21,776 crore, ICICI Rs.16,855 crore and HDFC Bank Rs.5,947 crore. TCS is close to RIL.
