We will look at the 10 most valuable stocks on the NSE in terms of market cap and see how they performed. In fact, for the week ended 30th September, the aggregate market cap of 7 out of the 10 most valuable stocks on NSE saw value destruction to the tune of Rs116,053 crore. This could have been a lot worse had it not been for the late bounce on Friday. Overall, the indices lost 1.3% in the week, with midcaps and small caps joining in.

Let us focus on the major market losers for the week ended 30th September. Among big losers, Reliance saw its market capitalization fall by a huge Rs41,706 crore. Among other major heavyweights that saw depletion in market value were the financials led by SBI losing Rs17,314 crore, ICICI Bank giving up Rs13,807 crore, HDFC Bank depleting its market cap by Rs13,424 crore. In addition, HDFC Ltd lost Rs10,831 value and Bajaj Finance Rs10,241 crore.

Interestingly, the big gainers in the week were the defensives. The biggest weekly gainer was Infosys which added Rs20,145 crore to its market cap tally while TCS managed to add around Rs7,977 crore to its market cap. Clearly, with the dollar strengthening, the dollar gains appear to be offsetting worries over tech spending. The other gainer was Hindustan Unilever which managed to add Rs4,124 crore in market value for the week.
