For the previous week ended on 28th October 2022, a total of 9 out of the 10 most valuable companies on the NSE as measured by market cap were in the positive. Put together they added Rs90,319 crore in market cap on a combined basis. The previous week was a relatively truncated week with 1 full holiday and 1 day of Muhurat trading for about an hour. The sole company to lose big value in the previous week was Hindustan Unilever giving up Rs30,509 crore. While the numbers were not bad for Q2, Hindustan Unilever came under pressure on expectations that rural markets (a core market) could be under strain. That is what made Hindustan Unilever the only loser in the otherwise positive Nifty.

Gainers were a lot more decisive during the week. Reliance Industries led the way with market cap gains of Rs36,567 crore in the week. While the results saw some pressure from the oil to chemicals (O2C) business, the positive sentiments stemmed from RIL planning to hive off its fintech subsidiary, Jio Financial. This is likely to create value explosion for the group. Among other gainers in the week, HDFC Bank added Rs11,196 crore while Bharti Airtel added Rs10,793 crore to its market cap ahead of its quarterly results to be announced during the coming week amidst hopes of improved ARPUs. Other gainers included SBI Rs8,880, TCS Rs8,617 crore, HDFC Ltd at Rs8,214 crore and Infosys Ltd at Rs5,260 crore.
