Not surprisingly, in a week where the Nifty was down more than 1.2%, the sellers had the upper hand. Hence for the week ended on 23rd September, the market capitalization of 7 out of the 10 most valuable companies on the NSE saw erosion to the tune of Rs134,139 crore. Only defensives were in the positive for the week, especially from the pharma sector and to an extent the FMCG sector. The weak advance decline ratio for the week also indicated that the pressure on the markets could continue in the coming week too.

In terms of major value losers; Reliance Industries gave up close to Rs40,558 crore in market value, HDFC Bank lose close to Rs25,545 crore and another recent entrant in the top list, Adani Transmission, lost Rs24,630 crore, after a very frenetic rally in the past few months. Other losers were ICICI Bank Rs18,148 crore, SBI giving up Rs9,951 crore and TCS also conceding Rs9,459 crore in value. For the week, Hindustan Unilever gained Rs35,467 crore ITC Ltd Rs20,382 crore and Bajaj Finance added Rs13,129 crore. The defensives were largely the consumer stories that are likely to be buoyant even in these tough times.
