On Friday, the last day of the previous week, the Nifty index was down 70 points closing the week at 17,153 levels. Among the various sectors, the auto stocks continued to be under pressure on a combination of concerns over input costs, falling sales and Maruti conflict of interest issue. One sector to watch on Monday will be media stocks like Zee, PVR and INOX.

The overall breadth of Nifty as measured by the advance decline ratio was unfavourable with A/D ratio at 13:37. This was amidst VIX tapering to 23.43 levels. The rally was visible in select stocks like Asian Paints and RIL which witnessed aggressive buying at lower levels. FMCG and autos were two sectors that continued to be under stress on cost issues.

Foreign investors were net sellers of Rs.1,507 crore while domestic funds bought stocks worth Rs.1,303 crore on Friday. Overall FPI selling is at Rs.46,000 crore for March. On Friday, the Dow was up 153 points while NASDAQ slipped 23 points, Europe was positive even as the SGX Nifty has been trading with gains of 21 bps in early trades on Monday.

It must be said that the markets have once again got into uncertain zone with the big question being over Fed aggressive stance. It is hard to fathom how the US can combine higher rates with the war like situation in Russia and Ukraine. Markets remain shaky and best not to take fresh positions. The Q4 results may give the next set of cues.
