In the midst of the Coronavirus lockdown, Reliance’s Jio Mart has gone live in suburban areas of Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan. With Facebook taking a 9.99% stake in Reliance Platforms, Reliance gets the immediate benefit of direct access to WhatsApp's user base of over 400 million in India. To order from Jio Mart, customers just need to add Jio Mart's WhatsApp number 88500 08000 on their phones. Immediately after that,, Jio Mart sends a link to the customer's WhatsApp chat window valid for 30 minutes. Clicking on the link directs the user to a new page to fill his address and phone number after which the catalogue of products is made available to order from. The more interesting part is the actual execution. Once the final order is placed, it is shared with the local Kirana store on WhatsApp. The customer receives a notification with the order and the Kirana / Jio Mart store details on his number. Currently, the only payment option is cash and the customer has to pick up the order from the store. But that is just a starting point for Jio Mart.
