Adar Poonawala of Serum has underlined that India will be given first priority for the delivery of the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine. The vaccine had recently claimed over 93% efficacy ratio in clinical trials in Stage 3. Serum is the world's largest vaccine manufacturer by volumes.

Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of Serum Institute confirmed that the company had already produced 4 crore doses of the vaccine so far and expect to touch 10 crore doses by end of January 2020. Nearly 90% of the output would be sold to Indian government at Rs.250/dose.

For that the company needs the emergency-use licence so that they can start rolling out the doses from this year itself. After the first two rounds in Phase 3, AstraZeneca reported 70% effectiveness after testing on nearly 25,000 persons.

Unlike the Pfizer drug, the Oxford drug can be transported easily at normal refrigerator temperatures which are in contrast to the Pfizer drug that requires -74 degrees, something not feasible commercially. AstraZeneca plans to produce up to 3 billion doses of the vaccine in 2021.

In India, the priorities are well set. They expect administration of vaccines to start from June 2021 onwards. First in line would be health workers, frontline workers including police, paramilitary and those working in sanitisation. Senior citizens would also be in the list.
