Foreign portfolio investors have brought in net investments to the tune of Rs.7,245 crore into Indian markets in August as of the 20th. Talking of equities, a total of Rs.5,001 crore was invested in equities while the debt segment also saw inflows to the tune of Rs.2,244 crore. The combined impact has been Rs.7,245 crore and this has happened in a month when FPIs have been heavy sellers in most of the other Asian economies. Sample these!

The selling across most of the other Asian EMs continued in August. For example, South Korea saw net FPI outflows of $5.27 billion while Taiwan saw net equity outflows of $855 million. Even Thailand was not spared and it saw outflows of $341 million. Apart from India, Indonesia saw net FPI inflows of $155 million. Fed taper is the big immediate risk for the markets and that is what is keeping most FPIs cautious on EMs at this point of time.
