For the year 2021, while the start of the monsoon may have been disappointing, the late rains more than made up for the shortfall. According to data put out by the Indian Met Department, the month of Oct-21 marked the heaviest rainfall recorded in India in the last 120 years. This heavy October rainfall was due to the remnants of the Southwest Monsoon winds, combined with Northeast winds; with Kerala alone getting 589.9 mm in October.

In a way, these late rains not only made up for the deficiency in the June-July months, but gave a big boost to the winter Rabi sowing as most reservoirs reached full levels. This time also therefore promises to be an overall bumper year for agricultural output. This is good news for the agriculture sector as it will certainly ensure that grain output is on target and even better than last year. Above all, it will temper the dangers of rising CPI inflation.
