How is the coal production scenario in the month of May 2022?

In the month of May 2022, India's coal production surged by 33.9% to 71.30 million tonnes. According to the Coal Ministry, this total output was achieved across the major coal miners owned by the government as well as by the captive mining companies. The largest producer of coal in the Indian economy, Coal India saw output surge by a hefty 30.04% to 54.72 MT. Coal India alone accounted for 77% of the total coal output in India in May 2022.

The Singareni Collieries which is owned by the government of Telangana State, saw output grow by 11.01% at 6.04 MT in the month of May. One of the key trends in the month was the surge in output by the captive mines as they focused a lot more on own coal, especially NTPC. Output of captive mines grew 83.3% at 10.54 MT. This resulted in thermal power generation growing by a whopping 26.2% in May 2022. Power generation in May 2022 stood at 140,059 MU; largely supported by hydro and wind energy.
