While it is true that several Scandinavian nations like Denmark, Iceland and Norway suspended the administration of AstraZeneca vaccine due to blood clot fears, the WHO has said there was no reason to stop using AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine. Recently, Bulgaria has also joined the list of country suspending Astra Zeneca vaccine administration. However, Germany has said that it would continue to administer these vaccines.

The European Medicines Agency or EMA backed the use of the vaccine on the grounds that the benefits outweighed its risks. But the news could have an impact because recently Thailand delayed the use of Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Even the company has officially announced that it did not find any evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis which are typically marked by the formation of blood clots.

The suspensions could actually derail Europe’s valiant efforts to speed up the vaccine roll out. Europe already trails the aggressive vaccine campaigns in the UK and the US. This has the potential to prolong the social and economic pain of the pandemic. India has to still depend on the Astra Zeneca shot till the time Bharat Biotech, COVAXIN, is able to reliably deliver scald and quality.
