Foreign portfolio investors or FPIs were net buyers in the first week of October to the tune of Rs.1,997 crore. This was the overall infusion by FPIs with the global investors infusing Rs.1,530 crore into equities and Rs.467 crore into debt. This continues the trend for the last 2 months. It may be recollected that earlier FPIs had infused Rs.26,517 crore into Indian markets in Sep-21 and Rs.16,459 crore in Aug-21. The trend remains positive.

There were some sectoral trends visible in FPI action. For example, the FPIs were moving out of banking and into IT. Ironically, this is converse to the trend in September when the FPIs had sold IT stocks worth $902 million. Among the emerging markets; India, Philippines and Thailand reported FPI inflows but Taiwan, South Korea and Indonesia witnessed big FPI outflows. Taiwan also has geopolitical concerns to contend with at this point of time.
