Foreign portfolio investors pumped in a total of Rs.7,605 crore in the first 7 trading days of Sep-21. The break-up of these flows is as under. It includes equity flows of Rs.4,385 crore and debt flows of Rs3,220 crore. Debt flows have been robust in the last month and half on the back of tapering yields on the US benchmark bonds, thus widening India yield spread.

In fact, even in August FPIs had infused Rs.16,200 crore predominated by Rs.14,376 crore into bonds and a very small amount into equities. That was on the back of the strength in the INR and improving spreads of Indian debt over US bonds. FPIs have re-rated Indian debt after the reassuring words of Jerome Powell at Jackson Hole Symposium on Fed rates.
