The Ministry of Commerce puts out preliminary merchandise trade data on the first day of the month for the previous. According to early estimates, India’s merchandise exports fell by 13% over March to $30.21 billion. However, on a yoy comparison with Apr-20, the exports were up 200%. But this was an exceptionally low base and hence not comparable.

The growth in outbound export shipments in April was led by petroleum products, engineering items and gems & jewellery exports in the light of a surge in global demand. What is material is that COVID did not impact exports in any significant manner. Imports of physical goods in Apr-20 came in at $45.45 billion resulting in a higher trade deficit of $15.24 billion. The real import pain points came from gold, oil and electronics imports.
