Interglobe Aviation, the holding company of Indigo Airlines, reported widening of its losses for the Sep-21 quarter at Rs.1,440 crore. The trigger for the widening of losses was the higher fuel expenses during the quarter due to a sharp spike in ATF or aviation turbine fuel prices. This had the impact of negating the gains of the rebound in travel demand, which has been evident since the DGCA gradually raised the flying capacity to 100%.

In the case of Interglobe, they saw their fuel expenses increase by a whopping 208% in the quarter compared to the Sep-20 quarter. The good news was that the passenger numbers picked up in the quarter and more than 71 lakh passengers flew in India in the month of September alone. Indigo Airlines is India’s largest domestic airline with a 56% market share in the domestic market. Since COVID began, it has bene showing losses for 6 quarters.
