India’s overall exports consisting of goods and service is estimated to have grown 93% to $51.79 billion in April. Out of this the merchandise exports were $30.63 billion while the balance $21.16 billion was accounted for by the export of services. The yoy growth can be quite misleading as it was on an extremely low base of last year when the pandemic was at its peak. Most of the export items saw phenomenal growth on yoy basis.

However, the total merchandise trade deficit widened to $15.10 billion in the month of April threatening to push the total trade deficit for the full fiscal year closer to the $200 billion mark. The overall deficit including merchandise trade and services trade for Apr-21 stood at $6.93 billion, which is half of the overall deficit in the whole of the previous fiscal year. The bigger risk for exports is the weakness in the MSMEs, which account for bulk of exports.
