Since the pandemic, health insurance policies are necessary because of their health and financial benefits. However, as people’s personal health, medical and financial needs are unique, insurance companies offer various add-ons that you can add to your basic health insurance policy to customize and increase coverage.

One such add-on is the OPD cover. OPD means Out-Patient-Department wherein treatment or diagnosis is made regarding certain types of illnesses upon the advice of a medical practitioner. OPD treatment has a prerequisite that the patient gets the treatment done without needing to be admitted to the hospital.

Expenses covered under an OPD cover in health insurance plan include:

  • Doctor’s Consultation fee: With an OPD cover, the fee you give to the doctor for diagnosis or treatment is covered.
  • Pharmacy Expenses: The cost of medicines prescribed by the doctor is covered under the OPD cover.
  • Diagnostic Cost: OPD add-on covers costs of diagnostic tests such as CT scans, X-rays, blood tests, sonography, etc.
  • Hearing and Visual Aid: The cost of hearing aid such as medical earbuds and visual aid such as spectacles is covered.
  • Dental Procedures: Dental procedure costs such as filling, tooth extraction, root canal, etc., are covered.
  • OPD cover allows complete health coverage and helps immensely, especially to a person suffering from a pre-existing disease that demands a regular doctor consultation.
However, you should consult an insurance advisor before adding the OPD cover, as the premium for such policies can be higher.
