That is absolutely correct. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd or BHEL for short, has emerged as the lowest bidder for supplying equipment for the 6x700 MW power projects of Nuclear Power Corporation of India or NPCIL. It may be remembered that NPCIL is the government sponsored entity that drives nuclear energy generation in India via various installed ploants across India.

BHEL had bid a price of Rs.10,800 crore for the fleet mode tender floated by NPCIL for the 6x700 MW Turbine Island Package Projects. One of the most important part of a nuclear plant is the heavy water reactor. These Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors or PHWR hold the key to the Nuclear Power Programme. Currently, a total of 12 out of 18 PHWRs of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited or NPCIL are equipped by BHEL.

While the remaining reactors are supplied from Canada and Ukraine, it must be said that BHEL plays an important role in the nuclear power ambitions of India. BHEL had supplied turbines for Kaiga Unit-1 which had created world record of uninterrupted operation for 962 days. This decision to rely heavily on indigenous Indian technology and manufacturing is one of the major anthems of the Atma Nirbhar Bharat project.
