The relentless selling by the Foreign portfolio investors or FPIs continued in the previous week as they offloaded equities worth Rs.5,689 crore in July 2021. Clearly, FPIs have continued to stay cautious on emerging markets, especially, the Asian emerging markets, due to the strong dollar. The risk of the delta variant of COVID as well as the deluge of IPOs are also keeping FPIs on wait and watch mode for now.

However, there is good news on the debt front. During the first 3 weeks of July, FPIs infused Rs.3,191 crore in the debt segment. As a result, net withdrawal stood at Rs 2,499 crore. FPIs have been concerned about an amalgam of higher crude oil prices and a strong US dollar; both key macro risks for India. While FPIs have continued to be persistent sellers in equities, they have been heavy investors in the Zomato IPO last week, which is the good news.
