India's 12 major government-owned and operated ports saw a sharp fall of 16.6% in cargo volumes for the April to August period in this fiscal year at 245.04 metric tonnes. This marks the fifth straight month of decline in port volumes since the onset of COVID-19.
These 12 government-owned ports handled total cargo volume of 293.67 MT during the corresponding Apr-Aug 2019 period last year. These 12 ports, put together, account for around 61% of the total cargo volumes from and to India.
Out of these 12 ports, Chennai, Kochi and Kamrajar saw cargo volumes dip over 30% while Mumbai’s JNPT and Kolkata port saw over 20% drop in volumes during Apr-Aug period. The onset of COVID-19 saw sharp declines in handling of containers, coal and POL commodities. POL refers to petroleum, oil and lubricants.
