In fact, there is a mega expansion of steel capacity that is underway as JSW Steel moves in to occupy the space left open by POSCO. Currently, JSW Steel is in the midst of acquiring land at Jagatsinghpur in the state of Odisha with a view to setting up a 13.2 MTPA green-field steel plant.

It may be recollected that this is exactly where the Paradip Port is located. It is here that POSCO of South Korea had planned to establish 12.3 MTPA steel plant and had subsequently shelved the idea. At that point of time, POSCO had faced delays in environment clearance as well as consistent protests by locals living in around that areas.

Now JSW plans to incur a total CAPEX of Rs.53,700 crore to set up the 13.2 MTPA plant in the Jagatsinghpur area along with a 900 MW power plant for captive use. This is likely to give a significant boost to the steel capacity of the JSW Group.

In fact, JSW Group had approached Odisha government for land after POSCO had shelved its plans to set up the steel plant in India. Subsequently, all statutory clearances given to POSCO were transferred to JSW Steel. The expansion
