As steel companies contend with falling steel prices, Tata Steel has gone ahead and ordered cheap coal from Russia, despite indicating that they would shift to other sources of coal due to the western sanctions on Russia. Tata Steel imported 75,000 tonnes of coal from Russia in third week of May 2022 just after it had pledged to stop doing business with Russia.

Tata Steel manufacturing sites in UK and the Netherlands are starting to look at alternatives. Out of the 75,000 tonnes of coal ordered by Tata Steel, a total of 42,000 tonnes were offloaded at Paradip port in Odisha while 35,000 tonnes were offloaded at Haldia in West Bengal. In recent times the purchase of coal from Russia had spiked due to huge discounts offered by Russian miners.
