To bridge its divestment gap, the government may look to privatise around 5 to 6 PSUs that have been identified as neither strategic nor in larger public interest. The process is expected to be completed by Jan-22. If it happens, it will be the first effective privatization done by the government in the last 19 years. Going ahead, the government will hold stakes in companies that are subjects of national security or there is larger public interest.

For now, as per reports coming, the government has already identified 5 PSUs to be privatized. These include BEML, Shipping Corporation of India, Pawan Hans, Central Electronics and Nilachal Ispat Nigam. Of these BEML and SCI are listed. Of course, the BEML sale has run into problems with employee unions opposing the privatization. Even with LIC and BPCL, government may fall short of its Rs.175,000 crore divestment target for FY22.
