Early indications from Kharif sowing in 2022 are not too encouraging if you purely go by the acreage or the percentage sowing. For instance, rice saw a 24% drop in acreage in this Kharif compared to the previous season. Even oilseeds saw 20.21% lower acreage as compared to the previous year. If the overall acreage was considered then it was about 9.28% short of last year. This is surprising, since the cumulative Southwest Monsoon is just 2% short as compared to last year. The problem is more due to regional distress disparities.

Rainfall is deficit in 15 out of 19 districts in West Bengal; 16 of 30 districts in Odisha; 23 out of 24 districts in Jharkhand; in 30 of 38 districts in Bihar and in 71 of 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh. This was largely on account of patchy rains in the early part of the monsoon season. Oilseeds will largely depend on the rains in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Next 45 days will be critical since July and August are normally the 2 key months from a Kharif point of view as the rainfall is the maximum in these months.
