This is normal part of the SEBI surveillance, whenever some heightened activity is seen from specific geographies buying into Indian stocks at sharply lower levels. Therefore, SEBI has been keeping a watch on some of the major investments by Chinese companies in the Indian markets during the slowdown. There have been several examples of Chinese investment companies acquiring shares of Indian companies; the most prominent being PBOC hiking its stake in HDFC. There have been instances of Chinese investors using the current meltdown to hike stakes in some marquee American and European companies in the last few months and changing ownership patterns. While such investments are routine, SEBI has sought more details of these FPIs. The idea is to be cautious especially when the most marquee assets of the nation are involved.
