The news from the auto registrations is not too encouraging, even though auto companies have been reporting superb dealer offtake. According to FADA, cumulative vehicle registrations fell 28.64% yoy in Mar-21 on an all-India basis. This was partially due to the 7-day lockdown in last week of March after the pandemic resurfaced.
As I said earlier, the registration volumes are in contrast to the dealer dispatches that auto companies and SIAM have been reporting. The worry in April is that Maharashtra accounts for 11% of all-India vehicle registrations and the latest lockdown will be a dampener. A total of 1.65 million units were registered in Mar-21 compared to 2.31 million units in Mar-20.
