Facebook’s messaging app, WhatsApp, has finally decided to postpone its planned privacy update. For now, it has decided to put off the plan by 3 months. This, WhatsApp hopes, will give users enough time to review the policy and accept the terms of its proposed data sharing with Facebook. In short, your WhatsApp chats will not be private any longer.

The original deadline given by WhatsApp was February 08, but that has been cancelled and the deadline for accepting the tweak to its terms of service, involving sharing data with Facebook servers has been moved back by 3 months to May. WhatsApp has been at pains to confirm to its users that private data and family data will remain private only but obviously nobody is believing such facile stuff.

WhatsApp even confirmed that for that very reason, neither WhatsApp nor Facebook keeps any longs of who you are calling and who you are messaging and what you are messaging. WhatsApp also clarified that at the current juncture there is no data sharing with Facebook but anyone with a basic understanding of technology knows there are ways to circumvent such caveats and conditions.

It may be recollected that WhatsApp users had received a notification in the current month that it was preparing a new privacy policy and terms & conditions. The fine print was that WhatsApp reserved the right to share some of the user data with the Facebook app. That had obviously sparked a global outcry as many moved to Telegram and Signal.

It was clear when Facebook acquired WhatsApp that the whole idea was to eventually use the data of WhatsApp and the conversational intelligence to make finer sales pitches on Facebook. Over the last few months, WhatsApp is emerging as the default app for communication so Facebook is going to rely more on that for monetization.
