That is absolutely correct. In fact, Samsung plans to manufacture mobile phones worth Rs.370,000 crore or almost $50 billin in India. This will be largely under the special PLI scheme offered to manufacturers offering Production Linked Incentives.

The phones are expected to be priced at approximately Rs.15,000 per unit making it substantially accessible to vast swathes of the population. This $50 billion plan is the biggest “Make in India” commitment made by any global company till date.

Samsung is not alone. There are also other participants that have already expressed interest in the PLI scheme and these include; Wistron, Pegatron, Foxconn and Hon Hai. All these companies are look at the PLI scheme to shift manufacturing largely from China to India.

The government has estimated that total mobile phones worth Rs.11 trillion will be made in India in 5 years under the PLI scheme and this would put India in the big league of mobile manufacturers along with countries like China, Taiwan and Vietnam.
