By now it is well known that the Nifty has given returns of around 11.3% during the Samvat 2076. However, what that does not reveal is that there is huge divergence among individual returns with companies giving returns ranging from +95% to as low as -49% in the year.
For Samvat 2076 it is not just the mid cap stocks but even a large number of Nifty stocks that have done extremely well. In fact, you may be surprised to know that a total of 10 Nifty stocks gave positive returns of more than 25% during the Samvat Year.
Out of these 10 stocks, there are 5 stocks gave returns of more than 50%. The top-5 stocks, are dominated by IT and pharma sector stocks with only one candidate from metals. IT and Pharma were the obvious winners with even the indexes giving over 40% in the year.
Hyderabad based Divi’s Labs gave 94.9% returns, Infosys gave 76.2%, Reddy Labs yielded 74.2% and Cipla earned 62.2%. The only company outside of pharma or IT in the top-5 was JSW Steel which have healthy returns of 57.7% on the back of a sharp revival in steel demand.
The heavyweight Reliance Industries gave 39.8% returns during Samvat 2076. Among the others Wipro gave 36.2% and Tata Steel yielded 34.6% returns in the year. Bharti Airtel also returned 25% returns during the Samvat 2076 as did TCS.
If you look at the index overall, a total of 30 stocks in Nifty gave positive returns and 20 gave negative returns in Samvat 2076. Among the worst performers in the Nifty index, ONGC lost 48% while IOCL and IndusInd lost over 40% each during the year gone by.
