There are no two opinions. Rajeev Chandrasekhar should not have encouraged moonlighting or even rationalized it with his comments. He says that the concept of moonlighting reflects the changing work culture in the Indian IT space. That is absolute hogwash. Moonlighting is just another name for two timing. What would possibly really scare the employees after the Wipro episode is that employers are now sharing information with each other about employees who are two timing. That is a good example.

If we assume for a moment that Rajeev Chandrasekhar has a point that people cannot stick to a job for their life, there are two options available. Firstly, these employees can always change jobs and nothing is stopping them from doing that. Alternatively, they can always branch out on their own as consultants or entrepreneurs and get exciting results. Then, nothing stops them from working with multiple clients provided they can convince their existing that there is no conflict of interest. But, that is a risk which employees are avoiding.

Moonlighting is just another name for lack of allegiance to your employer. It is a myth that the IT industry is divided. Only professional CEOs of IT companies without skin or capital in the game are OK with moonlighting. Others like Infosys and Wipro who have invested their capital and enterprise in the companies can never tolerate moonlighting. To put it crudely, IT companies cannot afford to have moles on their rolls taking fixed salary from one company and using their clients and resources to benefit competition. That is insane.
