One of the key reasons for the underperformance of Nippon India Tax Saver Fund has been its significant exposure towards mid and small-cap stocks which are still quite down from their peak in early 2018. In addition, its bet on high beta cyclical sectors added to the underperformance of the scheme. However, off late, there has been some recovery in the broader markets, and cyclical are also turning positive.
Though the lock-in period in tax saving mutual fund schemes is only 3 years, it is always recommended to invest in them with an investment horizon of at least 5-6 years as equities do well in the long run. Also, it is advisable to link investments to realistic financial goals of life.
