What are the expectations from the Railway Budget 2022?

The Indian Railways is largely expecting a boost towards infrastructure as well as technological push in the Union Budget 2022-23. Several media reports suggest that the government planning to raise the plan CAPEX size by up to 20% of last year’s budget estimates. In FY21-22, the government had allocated Rs 2.15 lakh crore, which was the highest ever for the Railways.

Reports also suggest that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may announce the expansion of Vande Bharat train sets, new wagons, and provisions for the use of Hyperloop for the next financial year. The government has also set a target of becoming the world’s first 100% green railway with net-zero emission by 2030. To achieve the target, the national transporter plans to achieve 100 percent electrification of railway routes by 2023. In 2020-21, more than 6,015 km had been electrified, surpassing the record of 5,276 km in 2018-19.

On the other hand, the Ph.D. Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) has shared a few suggestions to benefit the national transporter. The PHDCCI has recommended that the government consider setting up the railway line from Pandurangapuram, a neighborhood in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam, to the temple town of Bhadrachalam in Telangana to boost tourism.

The PHDCCI has also appealed to the government to include coal and coke for concessional freight rates for Short Lead Goods Traffic that will boost railway revenue by increasing freight volumes and encourage shifting from road to rail for short distances. The Budget may also announce Hyderabad fuel-based trains for clean transportation in India. The ministry had said more than 1,000 railway stations obtain their energy requirements from solar panels.
