The government and the retail industry have been asking for checks and balances on digital ecommerce and that may finally be coming. In a major bid to take on the existing private sector ecommerce ecosystem, India will launch Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). This system has been concept and pioneered by Nandan Nilekani, the former CEO of Infosys and one of the most respect technology names in India.
The idea of ONDC is to end the dominance Amazon and Wal-Mart (via Flipkart) in the digital ecosystem. Flipkart and Amazon have been consistently accused of violating competition laws as well as routinely using predatory pricing tactics by favouring few sellers only. The ONDC platform is agnostic and therefore allows the buyers and sellers to connect and transact irrespective of their application. In a way, it will be platform indiferent.
