It looks like the regulator is coming down heavily on the NSE for the colocation case, which has been hanging fire since 2015. SEBI has imposed heavy penalties in the dark fibre case in which a clutch of brokers had blatantly manipulated the NSE internet infrastructure in order to get faster connectivity via unauthorized connectivity to its colocation facilities. Why did they do it? This gave them a micro-second advantage, and believe me that is a very huge advantage in high frequency trading.

Now SEBI has put heavy penalties on the people it feels are guilty of either oversight or misfeasance. SEBI has imposed a penalty of Rs7 crore on NSE and a penalty of Rs5 crore on Chitra Ramkrishna, the former MD and CEO of NSE. In addition, SEBI has also imposed a fine of Rs5 crore on the controversial Anand Subramanian, who also doubles up as the Sadhu from the Himalayas. A similar penalty was also levied on CBO, Ravi Varanasi for dereliction of duty. The ISP, Sampark Infotech, is also penalized for Rs3 crore.
