Prima facie, it does look like the RBI will not be extending the moratorium on EMIs beyond the stipulated date of 31 August as requested by banks and financial institutions. However, Finance Minister will take a final call on EMI moratorium after consulting with banks.
Most of the veteran bankers like Deepak Parekh and Uday Kotak have called upon the RBI not to extend the moratorium any further as it was becoming a significant credit risk for the banks. However, RBI is not too sure if NPAs would spurt once the moratorium is withdrawn.
