Byju’s recently announced its financial results for fiscal year 2019-20 and the company has seen its losses expand by 30 times. The sales were largely driven by sales of devices. However, total sales for the fiscal year grew by 80% from Rs.1,305 crore to Rs.2,380 crore. During the same period, the net loss of Byju’s also expanded exponentially from Rs.-8.82 crore to Rs.-262 crore.

That has however not diminished the appetite of institutional investors for a stake in Byju’s. Despite a surge in annual expenses by 120% on a yoy basis in FY20, most institutional investors have been queueing up to take a stake in Byju’s. Interestingly, it was the sale of tablets and SD cards that are sold to students as part of the package, that accounted for 63% of the total sales for FY20.

Currently, Byju’s has more than 6.50 crore subscribers, and has added 2.50 crore new users signing up to use its platform after the covid-induced lockdown. It has recently made some interesting acquisitions including Aakash Education, Whitehat Jr. Great Learning, Toppr etc. It is currently valued at $16.5 billion based on the last fund raising in Jun 2021.
