While the government of India has been trying to put restrictions on Chinese participation in Indian markets in a big way due to the border stand-off, it is not too visible if you look at the smart phone market in India. That continues to be dominated by China.

After a lull in the June quarter, the smart phone segment in India has bounced back sharply post-lockdown to an all-time record high of 50 million units in the Sep-20 quarter. The market pattern, however, remains the same and China continues to dominate.

Currently, if you look at the Indian smart phone market, 76% of the market share is cornered by Chinese companies. China has been able to manufacture high quality and feature rich phones at very low costs, making Chinese phones preferred among the masses.

In the Indian Smartphone market, Xiaomi is the clear market leader with 26.1% market share followed by Samsung with 20.4% share in volume terms. In addition, Vivo and Realme have 17.4% share each while Oppo has 12.1% share of the smart phone market.

However, in value terms, Korean smart phone maker Samsung is the clear leader as many of its smart phones are much higher priced compared to Chinese products but is extremely popular in urban centres. Even Apple Inc has sold 8 lakh units in the latest Sep-20 quarter.
