The problem is that there have been just too many transgressions and disregard for safety that led to the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) forcing SpiceJet to fly at 50% departure capacity till its safety issues were sorted out. In the aviation industry, the safety of passengers comes first and foremost and there cannot be any compromise on this subject. That is where Spice Jet has really faltered. The decision underlines the importance of safety in aviation.

The irony is that had this happened in any other country the airline would have actually lost its license to fly. In India, the DGCA has been a lot more lenient and only cut 50% of their departures. The airline has reported just too many close shaves in the last few weeks and that has put the safety of passengers in grave danger. In an industry, where safety is paramount, the DGCA may have however taken a very statistical approach to the problem. It is not just the number of events that matter, but the disregard for safety.

There have been cases of international flights taking off and later realizing the apparatus was not working. There have been real cases of cracked windshield, which even forced an emergency land in an alien land. In addition, there have been cases of SpiceJet flights losing altitude suddenly or being forced to make an emergency landing in numerous cases. Now, DGCA has reduced flights by 50%.
