What is Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s view on moonlighting and why is he supporting it?

In a rather surprising move, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State (MOS) for IT and Telecom has come out in support of the IT employees in the moonlighting case. He is of the view that IT companies today cannot expect employees to stick to the same company for their life time. But here we are not talking about sticking to the company. We are talking about moonlighting wherein employees work for competitors while enjoying a fixed salary from the existing IT employers. Clearly that is a slimy practice that has to end.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar may be an important man in the government, but he is clearly dead wrong about moonlighting. It is surprising that being the Minister of State for IT and Telecom, the man has come out in support of IT employees in the moonlighting saga. This moonlighting saga gained a lot of prominence after Infosys issued a warning mail to its employees and Wipro chairperson, Rishad Premji, announced at a meeting that Wipro had fired 300 employees who were found to be guilty of moonlighting.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar putting the onus on IT companies for moonlighting is like encouraging violation of the code of ethics by the employees. As a Minister of State, he could have been more guarded. At the end of the day, what is wrong is wrong and even moonlighting falls in that category. It has been rampant is a fact, however, that does not in any way justifying the existence of moonlighting. It is a practice that has been used, or rather misused, by the employees during the WFH phase, when controls were limited.

In a sense, it is good that the action taken has been rapid and that should act as a deterrent against the abhorrent practice of moonlighting. For example, there was a furore after Rishad Premji announced that Wipro had terminated 300 employees from the rolls of Wipro for moonlighting. Rishad Premji put it aptly that moonlighting by any name was still a violation of ethics and rules. You got to owe allegiance to the company that pays you a fixed salary. Or, you should have the courage to branch out on your own and empanel clients.
