In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ayushman Bharat Yojna scheme to help economically vulnerable Indian citizens who needed healthcare facilities. Today, three years later, the Prime Minister launched a new scheme named Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission targeted towards poor and middle-class families who face problems in getting basic affordable medical treatment. Although the name of the two policies is almost identical, the Ayushman Bharat Yojna is a full-fledged healthcare policy, while Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission aims to digitize the process of affordable healthcare.

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission targets interoperability within the digital health ecosystem by issuing a Health Identity Card, creating Healthcare Facilities Registries and Healthcare Professionals Registry. The health card, valid for both public and private hospitals, will work as a health account where an individual can link personal health records through a mobile. Furthermore, the two registries will act as a point of contact for all healthcare providers across both traditional and modern medicine.

According to the official statement, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission aims to create a seamless online platform through a wide range of data, information, and infrastructure services. Furthermore, the scheme will benefit by duly leveraging open, interoperable, standards-based digital systems while ensuring the security, confidentiality, and privacy of health-related personal information. The Mission will enable access and exchange of longitudinal health records of citizens with their consent, and healthcare will be just a few clicks away for anyone with access to the internet.
