NTPC commissioned India’s largest floating solar photo voltaic or PV project with capacity of 25 MW. This is located on the water reservoir of its 2 GW Simhadri project located at Visakhapatnam in the state of Andhra Pradesh. This marks the first such solar project that is being set up under the government notified Flexibilization Scheme.

NTPC plans to have 60 GW renewable energy capacity by 2032 from just around 4 GW today. Towards this end, NTPC will invest over Rs.100,000 crore by 2024. By 2032, NTPC envisages total power capacity of 130 GW, which will be predominantly solar. In addition, in a move towards green power footprint, NTPC is also planning to set up a hydrogen-based micro-grid system on a test basis at Simhadri.

This floating solar installation at Simhadri boasts of a unique anchoring design and is spread across an area of 75 acres in the reservoir. This floating solar project will eventually generate electricity from more than 1 lakh solar photo voltaic modules. NTPC has set a target of 10% reduction in net energy intensity. Currently, NTPC has installed capacity of 67 GW across 71 power projects but these are predominantly thermal in naturel.
