Once there appears to be a divergence between private sector SKYMET and government owned IMD. While SKYMET has stated that monsoons are already on in India, the IMD expects the monsoon to get delayed by 2 days. Now, monsoons are likely to hit the Kerala coast only by June 3. This is on account of weak westerly winds near the Kerala coast.

Kharif cropping is substantially dependent on the extent and timeliness of rains. Onset of monsoons in June first week is normally acceptable, but delays beyond that have a negative impact. This year, the IMD has forecast normal rainfall between 96% and 104% of long period average or LPA. If so, this will be the third successive normal monsoon year.
