What is the market capitalization of the BSE now?

During the recent week ended 21 May, the total market cap of the BSE touched an all-time high of $3 trillion. This has been largely fuelled by a rally in mid-cap and small-cap stocks. The BSE Sensex is still around 4-5% below its peak. That implies wealth creation of $42 billion in this year. Only seven other countries have market cap of more than $3 trillion and they include the US, China, Hong Kong, Japan, UK, France and Canada.

Interestingly, this record market cap comes at a time when FPIs have been consistent sellers since March 2021. However, domestic institutional investors, including mutual funds and insurance companies are still long on markets. But the real enthusiasm is from mid-cap and small-cap companies. One trend clearly is that investors are heading for mid-cap stocks as higher risk appetite and cheaper valuations of mid-caps makes a strong case.
