Foreign portfolio investors or FPIs ended up net buyers worth Rs.1,210 crore in Indian markets in the first trading week of August ending on 06 August. Out of this total net inflow, Rs.975 crore pertained to net equity inflows while Rs.235 crore pertained to net debt inflows. However, we must not lose perspective that the FPIs actually infused Rs.5,000 crore in just 2 days last week during Tuesday and Wednesday.

However, this is still gratifying consider that the FPIs were net sellers to the tune of Rs.7,273 crore. FPI flows were substantially buoyed by PMI manufacturing, higher GST collections in the month of July as well as restricted spread of COVID. In macro terms, the FPIs continue to be wary of higher oil prices and the continued strength of the US dollar. Valuations and the deluge of IPOs are also likely to put pressure on the Indian secondary market flows.
