On the 10th March, the counting for the 5 state elections came to an end. In terms of the quantum of victory, it was 4-1 in favour of the ruling NDA party. That is a kind of vote for the status quo situation and also a good signal of stability as India prepares for the full-fledged elections in 2024. NDA retained power in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) virtually swept Punjab getting over 80% of the seats.
The BJP has won a very comfortable majority in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand as well as in the state of Manipur. However, in Goa it is exactly at the half way mark. The ruling party is confident that with the support of independents they can form the government. The big questions in the contest are in front of the Congress party. They not only lost one of the few states that they rule i.e. Punjab to AAP but literally got wiped out in Uttar Pradesh.
